If you’re looking for a vacation that’s smoking hot, there’s nothing like a getaway to an active or dormant volcano. Apple Vacations offers four great destinations that get you up-close-and-personal with ancient volcanoes. We promise, you’ll lava it! (We’ll see ourselves out now.)

Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

Located just a few hours east of Guanacaste, the Arenal Volcano makes a great day trip from your resort. “Resting” since 2010, Arenal was Costa Rica’s most active volcano for 43 years. Even though there’s no lava action today, visitors can hike through the rain forest surrounding the volcano, have a dip in its medicinal hot springs and take advantage of some of Costa Rica’s most majestic views.

Kilauea, Hawaii’s Big Island

The Big Island‘s active Kilauea definitely brings on the heat! While touring Volcanoes National Park, you can walk through lava tubes and then explore steam vents, native forests and cinder fields. Plus, on Twilight Tours, you’ll witness Kilauea’s explosive power first hand as night falls.

Haleakala, Maui

Before you fully adjust to Hawaii’s time zone, take a trip up to the summit of Maui’s dormant volcano Haleakala for majestic views of the sunrise. Tour pick up times are between 3 and 3:30 AM, so you’ll have plenty of time to relax on the drive up 10,023 feet to the top. “First light” creeps across the crater with magnificent pastels, and once the sun is up, check out the 360-degree view encompassing the Big Island of Hawai’i, West Maui, Lana’i, Moloka’i and beyond.

Adventure seekers can step it up with a zip line trip on the slopes just outside Haleakala National Park.

The Pitons, St. Lucia

St. Lucia‘s famed Pitons are actually two volcanic plugs (when magma hardens on top of a volcano vent on an active volcano). Visitors can enjoy them in two ways: with a vigorous hike to the top of Gros Piton or from afar in the colorful fishing village Soufrière.
